Recently, Hillcroft’s Muncie Advocacy group took a trip to the Statehouse to participate in the first 2013 meeting of the Self Advocates of Indiana. The Self Advocates of Indiana is a state-wide group of adults with disabilities built upon the common goals of being leaders for those with developmental disabilities, educating others about equal respect and understanding, as well as partnering with state government to create a system of supports and services. You can learn more about Self Advocates of Indiana on their website, www.saind.org.
At the meeting, members of the Muncie Advocacy group got to meet their representatives and ask questions. They learned about committees they can participate in and how the state lawmakers impact their daily lives. They also received phone numbers to call as well as learning the steps to advocate at the State House.
This is a great step for our consumers to begin to see the impact they can have by having their voice heard in the community. The Muncie Advocacy Group looks forward to expanding their experiences at the state level!
